Personal Branding Are you Obnoxious or Pleasant In the last month Ive received many messages from people.  Most of them are very pleasant, kind, thankful, excited, etc. A small handful of them are impatient, obnoxious, blaming, mad, finger-pointing, entitled, etc. Ill let you in on a little secret: I am ALWAYS judging you, wondering if you would make a great fit for my company, or for an introduction to one of my contacts. Ill let you in on another little secret: Everyone else is always judging you, too. You are being judged.  Stereotyped, if you will. If you are obnoxious (or any of those bad correlations), the people judging you (interviewing you, meeting you at a network event, seeing your writings online, etc.) will not want to do anything with you.  Theyll be hard-pressed to help you. You havent sold them on YOU yet. However, if you are pleasant (or any of those nice correlations), people will want to be around you.  They will be open to introducing you, referring you, helping you, etc. I know the job search sucks.  I know, from personal experience, that toxic attitudes can seep in by surprise, and can sour your effectiveness.  Read how I learned the hard way: I Smell Blood Please, develop the skill of being less obnoxious and more pleasant.  It will be a skill that will help you the rest of your life. Cooking Up a Good Breakfast for a Great Workday You’re heard it said, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But most mornings we end up racing the clock, rushing to get out the door and having breakfast is the last thing on our mind. But for me, breakfast is a must.  I am not a culinary arts expert, but here is what I eat for breakfast because having a good breakfast always starts my day off right. 1) Smoothie Smoothies are the ultimate grab and go for breakfast. I always prepare this, every morning, no exceptions. You can prepare a smoothie in under 5 minutes and adding a scoop of protein powder in your smoothie will keep you full all morning long. 2) Oatmeal You can make a huge batch of oats on a Sunday evening and then put it in containers that you can easily grab out of the fridge before heading to work. You can either heat it up or enjoy it at room temperature. Or consider making an overnight oatmeal. Mix your dry oatmeal with yogurt and refrigerate overnight. Add some fruit in the morning and you’ve got a delicious breakfast! 3) Eggs For a little more protein in the morning, consider having a hard-boiled egg for breakfast. 4) Burrito Breakfast burritos are a great and delicious way to start off your day. Super easy to prepare! Crack two eggs into a bowl and beat the eggs until they are properly mixed. Dice some ingredients of your choice and mix it with your egg. Microwave everything for about 3 minutes (or scramble) and put it into the tortilla, wrap it and you’re good to go.

A Guide to Synching SEO Social For Recruitment Marketers A  compelling online presence is  pretty important for professionals wanting to stand out from their competitors. How do you do it? Well, some might say blogging, social media and good content are the best things since sliced bread when it comes to cutting  through industry noise and elevating  your brand.  For sales people spending huge chunks of time prospecting on  sites like LinkedIn and Twitter, a strong online presence  will add weight  to your approach. But what about when you arent the one making the first move?  How searchable are you when a potential customer / candidate / client proactively looks up  the service you provide, in search of  someone to help them? A good place to start is up-skilling yourself with SEO and social media best practice. Ive spoken with  Jo Turnbull, blogger extraordinaire and organiser of the Search London event, to get  some expert insights on how to make sure they are working together, and giving you the best shot at being found online. SEO explained SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. And its basically making sure that your site is done in the best way possible to ensure you gain as much visibility and, obviously, traffic as possible. I like to call it the Simple Easy Option, something that people should be thinking about even before theyve actually set up their website and built it. Search Engine Land defines SEO as the natural process of getting traffic from the organic or natural search results on search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. I think in the past it used to be about keywords, I dont think it was about keywords, and improving your ranking position. Obviously, that was just for specific keywords but now we have universal search. So you can appear in image search, video search. You can also appear in direct answer. You can also appear with doing recipes, you can appear in rich snippets markup. So now its not just about exactly ranking. Its just overall visibility, and obviously, trying to get as much traffic as possible. And obviously as an e-Commerce site, to try and convert that traffic. How can social media and SEO work together? I think really, just to take a step back, I really think it is important that social media and SEO work together. Because basically they help build your brand. So, for example, looking at SEO, you need to make sure that your website is built in the best possible way so that you can have the highest visibility as possible, you dont have any technical errors wrong with your website. Youve actually got a website, lets say. And then also you have social media to help sort of boost that, boost the awareness. You can run, if you want, social campaigns through that. Some are paid, some are just promoting a blog post on your actual website. And when I say promoting, you dont have to always pay for that. If you have big enough community, you can be just posting that on your wall. What SEO tools work well with social media? Ive been in the industry for a number of years, so theres so many that I would recommend. Currently Im working at Searchmetrics, I really like their platform. Basically, they have a research facility  and they have the projects section. So the Research Cloud, you can find out what competitors are doing and then you can put those competitors into your project and then follow them against keywords. You can see what keywords theyre ranking for, what theyre not ranking for, or what theyre ranking for and youre not. So you have gap analysis, you can find out how the contents doing, you can see what theyre doing in terms of social media. Ive also used Majestic. Majestic is really good for, especially, for analyzing links. I had to do quite a few link removals a couple of years ago and that really helped me a lot. Ive used SimilarWeb as well before, just to see or review how the markets doing. Thats quite good. Hitwise, I have used as well. They are very interesting, you can get quite a lot of detail from Hitwise. Their support is very good. You just need to, obviously, try and put the filters on. So those are just some of the ones that I would recommend. You just need to, basically, have the time and resources to dedicate your time or your teams time to using these and to be able to get the most out of these platforms. Bacteria are open source - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The traditional view of evolution says that genes are passed along from ancestor to offspring. This view is currently being expanded to include horizontal gene transfer. Horizontal gene transfer is any process in which an organism transfers genetic material (i.e. DNA) to another cell that is not its offspring. By contrast, vertical transfer occurs when an organism receives genetic material from its ancestor, e.g. its parent or a species from which it evolved. Most thinking in genetics has focussed on the more prevalent vertical transfer, but there is a recent awareness that horizontal gene transfer is a significant phenomenon. Horizontal gene transfer is common among bacteria, even very distantly-related ones. For example, this process is thought to be a significant cause of increased drug resistance; when one bacterial cell acquires resistance, it can quickly transfer the resistance genes to many species. Who knew that bacterie were open source :o) Why is this interesting? It provides yet another example of cooperation in nature yet another reason to believe that nature does not favour the strong, tough and ruthless, that quite to the contrary, nature favours those who can and do cooperate. How to Find a Career that FITS According to Forbes.com*, some surveys have found that 87% of Americans dont like their jobs. This probably isnt surprising to you. Whether youre at a party or out to dinner more often than not, its one big gripe-fest, focused around the most loathed aspects of your jobs and whos got it the worst at work. Work is a big part of life so it comes up naturally in conversation. I find we often complain about our jobs instead of singing our bosss praises or something along those linesright?! Theres something about commiserating over the daily toil and all the hardships we endure, that connects us and makes us feel like we are all in the same boat. But what if we connected over how much we enjoyed our jobs instead? What would that be like? As a certified career coach, that is my mission: to change the way people feel about work; from seeing it as just a paycheck to having it be a fulfilling, rewarding endeavor that is an extension of their purpose and passion. Thats what this article is about, helping you find a career that FITS! So lets get started, to help you begin the process to find a career you are passionate about. First, take a deep breath. (Thats right, Im serious!) Right now, take in a long, deep breath to take some pressure off this process. I know what happens when I am tense and tight nothing flows. When youre tight, your thoughts tend to be restrictive, limited and self-defeating. So release some of this tension if you have it, and commit to allowing the process to flow. Breathe deeply and easily. Permit your mind to consider new possibilities. Because our jobs are vitally important to us, we tend to take this so seriously that we can end up becoming totally stressed out. Remember: there are unlimited options out there, and income can be achieved in so many creative and fulfilling ways! So breathe, and realize that you can do and be anything. As you feel yourself letting go of that nervous, negative energy, allow your mind to open up to new alternatives. Acknowledge your career situation; how did you get where you are today? Is it possible to recreate that process and go in an entirely new direction for yourself, your life? Of course it is. You did it before. You can do it again! Once youre aligned with the possibilities, trust that you will figure this out and believe in yourself. You can find a career you truly enjoy. Ive helped many people do it and Ive done it myself. I have faith that you can do the same! What are some ways you can remind yourself to believe and trust in your own abilities? Remember that people are relying on you this very minute. You have earned trust at your place of employment. The very job that YOU perform each day, helps one company bring in thousands, maybe millions or billions. That is no small feat, by any means! Give yourself credit for what you currently do that people rely on you for. Do you pay a mortgage each month? Has the state entrusted you with a drivers license? If other people have faith in you, isnt it time you trusted yourself? Who better than you knows what YOU excel at, and what type of career youre ideally suited for? Have faith in the choices you make. YOU can do it, YOUR way! Next, realize this is a process. Because youre probably relying on your current job to support yourself, you can make the move gradually if you need to. Because youre learning, the course of your path may change along the way. Youll figure it out. The process of reinventing yourself can take some time. Career transition involves careful planning, and outlining of steps and procedures. Set goals that are realistic yet also a stretch, so that you can step out of your comfort zone and set yourself up for success. Take time to consider the most important questions: • What do you enjoy most about the work you do now? • What are your greatest strengths? • What areas would you prefer to steer clear of in the future? • Who are the key people and resources youll need to help make your dream career manifest itself? • What about finances will you be borrowing money, or dipping into your savings as a way to get the plan off the ground? • How can you manage your expenses to successfully make the transition without hurting your bank account? If youre starting to feel overwhelmed, not to worry.
